A short commentary on Roland Barthes Mother Courage Blind Essay Example
A short commentary on Roland Barthes Mother Courage Blind Essay There are many men who altered time in creating a different world for everybody else. Some took it for worst, while others changed it for the better. Most of these men were all soldiers of a certain rank or leaders of nations, nonetheless of what they represented or what they done, they all have the same similarities. These men were all leaders. Bertold Brecht was a front-runner of literature, the originator of what we call epic theatre and he was an artistic leader with all of the qualities that was needed to originate this new theatre. Walter Benjamin describes Brechts epic theatre as ââ¬Å"[1]appealing to an interesting group of people who do not think without reasonâ⬠in his essay [2]ââ¬Å"What is Epic Theatreâ⬠in his illuminations. I will use this as the stronghold to my essay on Roland Barthes Mother Courage Blind and how Bertold Brecht influenced him. Brecht sets Mother Courage Blind and Her Children during the thirty years war, a war that went on for thirty years without reason, in many cases without a reason for the people living during the war. A war that the poor and working class lost what they did not see while the higher classes won with their losses. Brecht being a Marxist himself, I could imagine that he used the setting of this play as a left wing political act against the governments of the time. However one may argue that Brecht was himself a businessman, exploring the environment in his play by targeting the people who would be interested, but I very much doubt this was his intention. Brecht was a man of great culture, creativity and a sense of humor who influenced many of his time and still does now. What Brechtââ¬â¢s implies in this play is how great powers, in this sense the European powers use war as a profit venture. This is one of the main reasons which Mother Courage Blind attracted Roland Barthes. Barthes seemed to love the idea of Brecht displaying this act with his epic theatre and not preaching his thoughts through religion or politics as he states in his essay that Brecht ââ¬Å"unites his crucial intention to a true theatre, so that the propositionââ¬â¢s evidence results not from sermon or argument but from the theatrical act itselfâ⬠[3]. Barthes suggests that Mother Courage is suffering because she is blind to her own senseless acts, but this is what Bertold Brecht actually wants the audience to think as he later goes on to explain in the essay how ââ¬Å"we are once mother courage and we are those who explain her;â⬠[4]Barthes appreciates how Brechtââ¬â¢s intelligence in his theatre takes a hold of the audience and makes them lost in Mother Courage which then the audience is brought into her blindness without acknowledging the greatness of the theatre which has a enormous impact on the individual in the audience. Even though Brechtââ¬â¢s Mother Courage is an opportunist and a very inspiring character, it does not take much to see that she is simply a product of her environment and that the character is solely playing the part of a victim to make the audience feel for her struggles, which is what I believe Barthes meant by ââ¬Å"we are all once Mother Courage[5]â⬠by Brecht creating this character, it allows the audience to get in and get close with Mother Courage, feeling her emotions and what she is going through. As I have explained before, this play was written in 1939, which means most of the audience had already witnessed the First World War and the Second World War while Brecht was touring Europe. In a way Brecht seems to create this character so the audience could see themselves in Mother Courage and not make the same mistakes as her, because he only allows them to get close enough to judge her and nothing more. I trust if Walter Benjamin was alive to witness Mother Courage Blind and her Children in theatre, and if he were to write a criticââ¬â¢s essay about it, it would be the very similar to Roland Barthes version. The two men had a lot of similarities and I consider that if it was not for the tragic loss of Walter Benjamin, the two would have been very good friends. While reading Barthes Mother Courage I could sense a certain charismatic male. He explains what he seeââ¬â¢s as the only way and does not take in account any other opinions and expects for the reader to understand him and only understand his opinion. Barthes seems obsessed with the ââ¬Å"double vision: of the social evil and its remedies[6]â⬠which is seen in Mother Courage Blind and her Children. The social evil the modern day is drugs, alcohol and violence. These are all things that are frowned upon and the remedies to life that change people. The social remedies in Mother Courage Blind are basically the characters blindness. All things could be made better if Mother Courage actually steps back and looks, but what Barthes does not consider while writing his essay is what he would have done if he were himself in Mother Courageââ¬â¢s shoes himself? Throw in the fact that all Mother Courage knows is war, where as the audience obviously knows that there is an end to the thirty years war, she sadly doesnââ¬â¢t. Brecht Mother Courage has a very important quote towards the end of the play ââ¬Å" hope I can pull this wagon by myself. gotta manage. Not much in it, now. Gotta get back in businessâ⬠[7] this is the scene just after Mother Courage leaves her late daughter to be buried by the peasants. This quote could show that people are in need of psychological and materialistic support as she looses her daughter but her only concern is getting her business back running again which is what I believe Barthes emphasizes on about his social evil. Although it could be argued that this is all she knows and this is all sheââ¬â¢s know all her life. Although I see that Brecht is trying to show how the small people, also known as the working class does not have a say in what happens and all theyââ¬â¢ve got to do is get on with what ever is thrown at them, Barthes argues this matter and suggest that if people saw their own stupidity, they will realize their mistakes and change for the better. Most of Barthes drama works after this had resemblance to what Bertold Brecht had created with his epic theatre. After the war, Barthes helped establish a magazine called ââ¬Å"theatre populaireâ⬠I believe his main intention in this magazine was to assault the commercial drama of his days yet no one had really created theatre that will attack both social and political issues in the same play. But in 1954 Barthes came across Mother Courage Blind and Her Children while Brechtââ¬â¢s Berliner Ensemble was in France. This is where Barthes saw what he had longed to see from his university days after he had founded a theatre group which performed Greek plays. In Brecht he had found a theatre that brings together both Marxism and aesthetics in the same play. This was the start of a critic being unleashed into the world with the influence of a great leader in his own field.

How to Complete 2 Full College Papers in One Semester
How to Complete 2 Full College Papers in One SemesterFor many students, getting an advanced degree is only a dream - after all, they have the extra time to finish their high school diploma and just need to get on with it. But if you can muster up the courage to sit down and write 2 full college papers in one semester, you can save yourself quite a bit of money, time and effort.Current students who need to keep their grades up may be tempted to spend more money than they could otherwise afford, and there are so many high school books that are out of print. Some of them are even out of print again! But for students who want to get a more reputable education, rather than one that's going to hurt their chances of getting into college in the first place, they should be willing to sacrifice a little in order to get the course work and assignments completed in a reasonable amount of time.Even students who are looking to earn degrees in business, nursing, and other non-traditional majors nee d to spend time in the classroom for those classes. For one thing, they need to stay updated on how their school classes are progressing and how they can improve their abilities. They also need to participate in studies, take notes and complete assignments. And some are hoping to pursue majors that will give them more financial security, such as business or nursing.Because of the way these courses require additional credits, many classes are capped off at the maximum number of credits that students can take in a given semester. While there are some exceptions, most full time students who earn their degree through colleges or universities must make the choice between taking classes that will help them get better jobs or paying for their education. There are plenty of other things that students need to do besides taking credit-bearing courses that cap off the semester, such as continuing their education through taking online classes, attending class on campus, or taking low-level cours es. Many online colleges have made it possible for students to earn abachelor's degree or even a master's degree without actually leaving the comforts of their own home. If you can pull this off, the opportunities for further education are endless. Online colleges can even offer online programs that meet the standards of a traditional college program, so you will still receive your associate's degree and retain your teaching certification. However, for students who want to get an even higher education, attending regular classes and completing their degree is a very different story. Part of the difficulty for students who are trying to complete their degrees by offering them to employers is that they don't always meet the educational standards that employers look for. If they have taken advantage of online education, however, they may already have all the work experience necessary to pass the state certification exam required for employment.Students who would rather finish their degre es through completion of a variety of classes can do this by completing their assignments and reading through two full college papers in one semester. This works well for students who are still in high school, since it would allow them to take more time to study at their own pace, but it also has the benefit of making their degrees more widely known. Online classes are certainly a viable option for many students, and a double degree can definitely work out for you.

Vanity Fair by William Thackeray Essays
Vanity Fair by William Thackeray Essays Vanity Fair by William Thackeray Essay Vanity Fair by William Thackeray Essay Essay Topic: Literature This extract from Vanity Fair by William Thackeray follows the interaction of several characters, namely, Mr Sedley, Miss Rebecca and Miss Amelia, where the attention is focused on Mr Sedleys hesitation. Several characteristics of this passage are how the author has portrayed society, the way in which the author has expressed his characters, and the stylistic techniques of his writing. In this extract, Thackeray has used recollection and the surroundings to depict society. When Miss Rebecca began to ask questions about India, Mr Sedley replied and recounted all his memories. Through his recollection, we are able to gain an impression of what society was like due to his experiences. We are given the notion that Mr Sedley is part of the wealthy class due to his travel to India, Miss Rebecca asked him a great number of questions about India, which gave him an opportunity of narrating many interesting anecdotes about that country and himself, as at that time (the book was written in 1847) travel was very expensive and not many could afford that luxury. He goes on further to mention, the balls at Government House, which also further suggest that he is part of this affluent class as he is able to attend them. The manner in which he describes his experiences of India, and subject choices he chose to tell were also superficial. He illustrates his experiences in a very barbaric and shallow manner, which adds to our impression of his social class. Even the manner in which Miss Rebecca replies and where she laughs at, or comments upon, could all be considered conventions of the wealthy upper class. Descriptions of their clothing, and their activities that they engage in, all reflect their society, such as when Mr Sedley was, pulling up his shirt-collars, and when Miss Rebecca was knitting the green silk purse. Also, when some song which was performed in the other room came to an end, and caused him to hear his own voice so distinctly that he stopped, is an example of a characteristic of their society. Music was considered leisure and entertainment, and this was a frequent occurrence within their life. The way in which Thackery has expressed his characters is also a characteristic of this passage. In this passage, Mr Sedley is shown as a timid person. However, for a brief moment, due to Miss Rebecca, he is no longer timid and hesitant, but talkative and brimming with confidence. The author has portrayed Mr Sedley as a stereotypical quiet character who cannot hold a conversation with the opposite sex, until Miss Rebecca comes along. We notice in the first line that, almost for the first time in his life, Mr Sedley found himself talking, without the least timidity or hesitation, and again several times throughout the passage, and as he talked on, he grew quite bold, and actually had the audacity to ask Miss Rebecca for whom she was knitting the green silk purse? And if we still were not sure what sort of person he was, the author has used other characters to emphasise Mr Sedleys character, through Mr Osborne and Miss Amelia, Did you ever hear anything like your brothers eloquence? Why, your friend has worked miracles. The author has also suggested that Mr Sedley is a man who is easily swept up into dreams, and easily jolted out of them, when he boasts about his bravado about facing dangerous animals, and when hes jolted out of his reverie when the music stopped. And in the author presenting another side of Mr Sedley (the talkative side, as opposed to the quiet side), it also casts a light on Miss Amelia, who is the person responsible for showing the talkative side. We see Miss Rebecca as a lovely lady, who is talkative, willing to listen and easy to talk to, from her interactions with Mr Sedley and comments made by the other characters. In talking to Mr Sedley, it has reflected back upon her good qualities, as people generally like to talk to outgoing people, not timid people, and this good view we have of her is further reinforced by Mr Osbourne, Why, your friend has worked miracles. In displaying a character, he has also shown another characters qualities and also through the interaction between them. Much of the narrative technique is a characteristic of this extract. The author has used long sentences, which allow him to elaborate upon the scene at hand, and also reflects upon their society. Another technique he employs is constant sign posting. He signals what is to come, and this is done with every new idea or aspect, Sedley was going to make one of the most eloquent speeches possible. In doing this, it lacks the surprise; however, it reflects the society at the time, where everything was anticipated. Another characteristic of this extract is the authorial intrusion. Thackery lets the scene play out, then he adds in his authorial intrusion which is written in such a manner that it seems like common knowledge but really are his opinions. This is quite notable at the end of the extract, For the affection of young ladies is of rapid growth as Jacks bean stalk, and reaches up to the sky in a night. In this extract from Vanity Fair by Thackeray, there are various noteworthy aspects of this passage. They are how the author has portrayed society, the way in which the author has expressed his characters, and the stylistic techniques of his writing.

Argument Essay - Government should provide free education for
Argument - Government should provide free education for everyone, Do you agree - Essay Example First, because of the economy at the national level, ââ¬Å"school budgets are strained at the private level, diminishing the quality of educationâ⬠(Whelan, 2009, p.1). When budget issues arise because of economic difficulties, layoffs of teaching staff occur or certain activities which provide better education are cut from the school curriculum. The University of Leeds, as one example, recently announced a major budget reduction of à £35 million, with most of this in areas of staff wages (Whelan). When staff members are layed off or witness salary reductions, their internal motivations to provide quality education are reduced. This is why the government should use their strong financial resources to prop up private budgets so that students can have access to free educational tools and not worry about being given an education by unmotivated instructors. Also, at the parent level, the costs of education are significant and growing each year. The average cost to put one child through school is à £10,000 (Ross, 2009). When parents are facing rising costs in areas of household spending, such as with food inflation, these high costs of education can make parents have to decide to put their child through schooling which is not superior in terms of quality or performance. The government has the expertise and resources to assist in taking this burden off parents so that spending can occur in other areas to enhance household lifestyle. Third, free education would open up a great deal of choice for potential students and they would no longer be bound to attending only local or affordable colleges and universities. Using governmental resources, a student can begin analysis of many different learning facilities to find the one which best fits their unique skills or career-needs profile. When students are forced to pay the bill for
